Chilean utility Colbun has energised the first turbines at its 816 MW Horizonte wind project in northern Chile. The Horizonte wind project is situated in the Atacama Desert (Chile) at a site that Colbun secured under a concession in a public tender organised by the Chilean Ministry of National Assets. A group of eight wind turbines were energised in May, contributing with 1.3 GWh to the National Electric System (SEN) since May 13. With 81 out of 140 Enercon wind turbines installed, the project has reached more than 80% progress in its construction. Once operational, the wind project should be capable of generating 2,450 GWh of electricity annually. Colbun hopes to expand the wind farm by 180 MW with the addition of 24 new turbines of up to 7.5 MW. The utility submitted the environmental impact assessment for the proposed expansion in March 2024.
At the end of 2023, Chile had a total installed capacity of 38 GW, of which wind represents 4.7 GW (12%).
