The Chilean electricity group Colbún has started its 816 MW Horizonte wind project in the Antofagasta region. The US$900m project is located at 130 km from the Taltal municipality, and it is considered to be the country’s largest wind project - representing 17% of the current wind capacity in Chile - and the second largest in Latin America. The Horizonte project has 140 wind turbines with the capacity to generate 2,500 GWh, equivalent to powering a population of 750,000 and avoid about 0.5 MtCO2 of emissions.
Colbún is a Chilean electricity production company created from ENDESA’s Colbún and Machicura hydroelectric plants in 1986 and transferred as a subsidiary of the Production Development Corporation. The company accounts for around 16% of the country's power generation and has a total portfolio of more than 5 GW, of which over 1 GW are wind energy.
At the end of 2023, Chile had a total installed capacity of 38 GW of which wind represented over 12%.
