Codling wind park cuts turbine number by 30% and aims for 1.45 GW (Ireland)

EDF Renewables and Fred Olsen Renewables, the developers of the Codling Wind Park located off the Wicklow County coast in eastern Ireland, have received confirmation from Ireland’s power transmission system operator (TSO) EirGrid for its definitive capacity, which has been set at 1,450 MW. Previously, the project had an indicated potential capacity of between 900 MW and 1,500 MW. EirGrid has also confirmed the project's grid connection location at Poolbeg in Ringsend (Dublin). In addition, the project developers have decided on a 30% reduction in the maximum number of turbines for the project (from 140 to 100) due to advances in wind turbine technology and a better understanding of the wind park site.

In late December 2022, Codling Wind Park became one of the first six offshore wind projects to be issued maritime area consents (MAC) in Ireland. The project will now undergo a second round of public consultation from 11 January 2022 to 8 February 2022, after a first round that took place in March 2021.

Ireland plans to reach 7 GW of offshore wind by 2030. At the end of 2021, Ireland only had 25 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (but 4.3 GW for onshore capacity). Currently, the country has more than 28 GW of wind projects under development (310 MW under construction).
