Coal India Limited (CIL), India’s state-owned coal mining company, has signed a non-binding MoU to supply about 4.5 GW of green energy to AM Green Ammonia’s projects in India. AM Green Ammonia aims to produce 5 Mt/year of green ammonia by 2030. The energy is expected to be delivered in phases according to the development of AM’s ammonia production facilities, and it should come from a mix of solar (2.5 - 3 GW) and wind (1.5 – 2 GW) energy projects to be developed across India with an investment of about US$3bn. No timeline has been given regarding the project’s development. The announcement is in line with CIL’s target to achieve net zero by 2070 through the diversification of its business.
India seeks to install 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030, with an intermediate target of 358 GW at the end of 2026 (about 218 GW at the end of 2024).
