Coal companies plan to add 620 MW of power projects in Tanzania

Tanzanian companies have joined forces to develop 620 MW of coal-fired power plants in the country. Intra Energy Corporation (IEC), Edenville Energy and Kibo Mining are proposing to partner with other companies to build coal-fired power plants in southwestern Tanzania: IEC would build a 200 MW power plant at the Ngaka mine near Songea in partnership with Sinohydro, while Edenvile and Kibo would develop a 120 MW plant and a 300 MW plant near Mbeya town. Kibo has awarded a feasibility contract to Tractebel Engineering for its Mbeya project; Edenville has signed an agreement with Runh Power Corporation of China for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the 173 Mt mine and power generation plant.

Tanzania plans to diversify its power mix, mainly based on gas (53% in 2013), oil (21%) and hydropower (26%), by building up to 2.9 GW of coal-fired power plants between 2015 and 2025.
