PetroChina Guangdong Petrochemical, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), has put into commercial operation its 400 kb/d refinery complex located in Jieyang, Guangdong Province (southern China). The complex is notably able process 20 Mt/year of crude oil, produce 1.2 Mt/year of ethylene products and 2.6 Mt/year of aromatic hydrocarbons. The more than CNY65bn (US$ 9.2bn) refinery project started running trial tests in October 2022 and achieved successful start-up on 27 February 2023.
China’s refining capacity reached 17 mb/d at the end of 2021. There are around 65 refineries with a capacity of over 100 kb/d. The Zhejiang Dayushan refinery, commissioned in 2019 and expanded in 2020, is the country’s largest refinery, with a capacity of 800 kb/d, followed by the Zhenhai (Sinopec) and Dalian (CNPC) refineries with capacities of more than 400 kb/d each.
