CNPC launches 4th expansion phase of Turkmenistani gas field (10 bcm/year)

Turkmenistan has announced the start of construction works at the fourth phase of its Galkynysh gas field (Turkmenistani government press release 17/04/2026). In March 2026, the state-owned Turkmengaz and the National Oil and Gas Corporation of China (CNPC) signed an agreement for the design, construction and commissioning of the fourth phase of the project. Once completed the expansion should allow to produce an additional 10 bcm/year of gas at the field in the deserts of eastern Turkmenistan, along with drilling new production wells.

The Galkynysh currently has the capacity to produce a major part of the country’s gas exports towards China (30 bcm/year). Besides the potential to increase the Turkmenistan’s export capacity, the project is also aligned with the country’s energy policy also aims to modernise its fuel and energy sector.
