The Chinese state-owned company China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) generated 219 TWh of electricity from commercial operation in 2022, up 11% compared to 2021. CNNC’s nuclear units generated a combined total of 185 TWh of electricity in 2022, up 7% from 2021.
Due to the installation of new solar and wind capacity, the company also saw a surge of 51% in renewable energy power generation, which amounted to 22.5 TWh in 2022. CNNC aims to generate 228.5 TWh of electricity in 2023, of which 183.5 TWh from nuclear power and 34 TWh from renewables.
In 2021 at the national level, China generated 407 TWh of electricity from nuclear (+11% compared to 2020 but still less than 5% of the power mix), for an installed capacity of more than 53 GW.
