The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has announced the start of construction of the 1 GW Unit 4 of the Zhangzhou nuclear power plant located in Fujian Province, in south-eastern China. The reactor will be one of six Hualong One units to be installed at the site.
CNNC issued the environmental impact assessment for Zhangzhou units 3 and 4 in October 2020, and China's State Council approved the construction of the units in September 2022, as Phase II of the Zhangzhou plant. The nuclear plant is being developed in three phases, each comprising two units. The Zhangzhou project is owned by CNNC-Guodian Zhangzhou Energy Company, a joint venture between CNNC (51%) and China Guodian Corporation (49%).
At the end of 2023, China’s nuclear capacity reached 56.9 GW (with 56 operational reactors) and its nuclear power generation reached nearly 435 TWh (around 5% of the power mix). China targets 200 GW of nuclear capacity by 2035.
