CNNC starts building Phase 2 of the Zhangzhou nuclear plant in Fujian (China)

The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has started construction on the second phase of the Zhangzhou nuclear power plant, located in the Fujian Province (south-eastern China). CNNC has thus poured the first concrete for the 1.2 GW third unit of the nuclear plant. Zhangzhou’s second phase comprises the construction of two Hualong One nuclear reactors (Units 3 and 4).

The Zhangzhou power plant, which is set to feature a total of six 1.2 GW units once completed, is owned by CNNC-Guodian Zhangzhou Energy Company, a joint venture between CNNC (51%) and China Guodian Corporation (49%). As for phase 1, construction of Zhangzhou-1 began in October 2019, while construction of Zhangzhou-2 started in September 2020. The units are scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2024 and 2025, respectively. In September 2022, China's State Council had approved the construction of two Hualong One units as Phase 2 of the Zhangzhou plant. Two more Hualong One units are planned for Phase III.

At the end of 2022, China’s nuclear capacity reached 55.5 GW and its nuclear power generation reached 418 TWh. China targets 200 GW of nuclear capacity by 2035. The country currently has over 31 GW of nuclear capacity under construction and over 173 GW under development.
