China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has poured the first concrete for the fourth nuclear unit of the Sanmen nuclear power plant, located in the Zhejiang province (east China). Sanmen-4 is the second of two 1 GW CAP-1000 pressurised water reactors (Units 3 and 4) planned as Phase II of the Sanmen nuclear project.
The first phase of the Sanmen plant (two Westinghouse AP1000 units, rated 1.15 GW each) was connected to the grid and put into commercial operation in 2018. In April 2022, the Chinese State Council approved the second phase (two CAP-1000 units), along with the construction of pairs of reactors at Haiyang and Lufeng. After the completion of phase 2, the Sanmen nuclear plant will have a total installed capacity of about 5 GW and will generate around 40 TWh/year.
In 2022, China's nuclear capacity increased by more than 4% (+2.3 GW) to surpass 55 GW, thanks to the commissioning of the 1.1 GW Fuqing-6 nuclear reactor in Fujian in March 2022 and of the 1.1 GW Hongyanhe-6 nuclear reactor in Liaoning in June 2022.
