CNAT gets approval to operate Trillo nuclear power plant until 2034 (Spain)

Centrales Nucleares Almaraz-Trillo (CNAT) has been authorised to operate the Trillo nuclear power plant in the Spanish province of Guadalajara until 16 November 2034.  The authorisation was requested in accordance with the Closing Protocol signed in 2019, which indicated that Trillo would close in 2035 and the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition & Demographic Challenge (MITECO) gave the approval after receiving a favourable report on the conditions of the NPP by the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN).

The 1,066 MW pressurised water reactor began commercial operation in August 1988 and has gone through security improvements and technological modernisation. The CNAT estimates that the Trillo plant generates 3% of the electricity consumed in Spain, equivalent to the consumption of 2 million households avoiding the emission of 2.6 MtCO2 into the atmosphere.

Spain has 7 nuclear reactors under operation, all of them have secured extensions of their operating licences, with Trillo’s having the longest extension. Nuclear represents 6% of Spain’s total installed capacity (7.2 GW at the end of 2023) and 20% of its total power generation.
