CIP’s 295 MW Zhong Neng offshore wind park produces first power (Taiwan)

The Danish renewable developer Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has announced that its 295 MW Zhong Neng offshore wind project, located off Taiwan’s Changhua County, has produced its first power. Offshore installation work is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2024 and the project is planned to be fully commissioned by the end of 2024.

The Zhong Neng project, which will feature 31 Vestas V174-9.5 MW wind turbines, will be able to provide electricity to approximately 300,000 Taiwanese households. The wind park is jointly developed by CIP and the Taiwan-based China Steel Corporation (CSC). In May 2024, CIP inaugurated the 600 MW Chanfang-Xidao offshore wind park, also located off Taiwan.

At the end of 2023, offshore wind represented 1% of Taiwan’s installed capacity (with 613 MW), as the island only installed its first offshore wind turbine in 2017. Onshore wind capacity stood at nearly 2.1 GW at end-2023. Currently, Taiwan has nearly 1.9 GW of wind projects under construction and over 19 GW under development.
