The Danish fund managing company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) will develop three interconnector projects totalling 4.2 GW that will connect the United Kingdom with the rest of Europe through the North Sea. The three projects will connect the UK with Denmark (Aminth), Belgium (Cronos), and Germany (Tarchon). They are expected to reach a final investment decision (FID) in 2026 and the start of operations is scheduled between 2030 and 2032.
In late February 2023, the projects were included in the list of eligible Third Cap and Floor Window projects by the UK’s market regulator, Ofgem, alongside four other interconnection projects. CIP’s projects will progress through a more detailed financial and technical assessment with the Initial Project Assessment (IPA) award anticipated after the summer of 2023.
The UK currently has 6.7 GW of interconnection capacity with neighbouring countries and plans to increase this capacity.
