CIP and COP plan to develop a 500 MW offshore wind project in Bangladesh

The Danish investment company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), in partnership with Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP), has announced plans to develop a 500 MW offshore wind project in the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi infrastructure company Summit Group could also join the US$1.3bn project, which would become Bangladesh’s first offshore wind park. The project is expected to have a 30-year operational phase.

In June 2023, Bangladesh and Denmark had approved a Joint Action Plan for the next five years under the 2022 Sustainable and Green Framework Engagement, in which both countries agree to a partnership in green and clean technologies, as well as in investments for sustainable development.

Bangladesh does not currently possess offshore wind capacities (and only a negligeable 3 MW of onshore capacity). Most of its electricity comes from oil-fired and gas-fired plants. In 2021, oil represented 53% of the country’s installed capacity and 19% of its power generation, while gas represented 39% of its installed capacity and 77% of its generation. Renewables represented only about 2% of capacity and generation.
