The US real estate investment company CIM Group has started the construction of the first phase of the 2.7 GW Westlands Solar Park in the San Joaquim Valley in California (United States). The entire is Westlands Solar Park is one of the renewable energy zones identified as a Competitive Renewable Energy Zone (CREZ) through the Renewable Energy Transmission Initiative (RETI) process.

California aims to reach a 50% share of renewable in the power mix by 2025. At the federal level, the objective is for renewables to account for 20% of the power generation by 2020 at the federal level, implying a twofold increase compared to 2012 levels.
