CHN Energy connects a 1 GW floating solar project to the Shandong grid (China)

The China Energy Investment Corporation (CEIC or CHN Energy) has connected to the grid a 1 GW offshore floating solar power project located off Dongying, in China’s Shandong Province. The power plant is touted by CHN Energy as the largest of its kind in the world.

The project is expected to generate 1.78 TWh/year, equivalent to saving the use of over 503 kt of standard coal and reducing emissions by about 1.34 MtCO2/year. The project is the first of its kind to implement large-scale fixed pile foundation construction for offshore solar installations.

Solar power capacity in China soared by 55% in 2023 to nearly 610 GW, while wind power installed capacity rose by nearly 21%, surpassing 441 GW. The Chinese Government has committed to build 1,200 GW of renewables capacity by 2030. The country plans to achieve peak emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
