The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the Environment Agency have greenlighted the UK Hualong Pressurised Water Reactor (UK HPR1000) for construction in the United Kingdom, subject to the necessary licensing, planning permission and environmental permits, following completion of their in-depth assessment of the nuclear reactor design. The UK HPR1000 is based on the Hualong One nuclear reactor, designed by China General Nuclear Group (CGN).
General Nuclear Services (GNS), an affiliate of China General Nuclear (CGN, 66.5%) and France's EDF (33.5%), plans to use those UK HPR1000 reactors, rated 1.1 GW each, at the Bradwell B nuclear project in Essex, England (United Kingdom). The power plant project received an electricity-generating licence from Ofgem in December 2020. A planning application should be submitted to the British National Infrastructure Planning Inspectorate in 2022.
