The local Development and Reform Commission of Henan (China) has approved a proposal to develop a 700 MW/4,200 MWh long-duration storage plant from Zhongchu Guoneng Technology (ZCGN) (ESS News, 27/11/2025). The compressed air energy storage (CAES) project is expected to start construction works in 2026 in Shanzhou district of Sanmenxia, in Henan province (Central China) and it should have an operating life of more than 25 years. Final investment details have not been declared.
In 2021, ZCGN commissioned the 10 MW Feicheng demonstration project, China’s first salt-cavern CAES plant, followed by the 100 MW Zhangjiakou project. In April 2024, the company completed the 300 MW/1,800 MWh Feicheng advanced CAES national demonstration project.
The Henan project aligns with China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) and with the NDRC’s target to install 180 GW of new BESS capacity by 2027.
