China’s State Council approves two new nuclear projects in Guangdong and Zhejiang

China’s State Council has approved the development of two new nuclear power projects in the Provinces of Guangdong (southern China) and Zhejiang (eastern China), totalling about 4.8 GW. The Council has approved the construction of Units 3 and 4 of the Taipingling nuclear power plant, operated by China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) in Guangdong, and the construction of Units 1 and 2 of the Jinqimen nuclear power plant in Zhejiang. All four units will consist in the 1.2 GW Chinese-built Hualong One reactor.

The Taipingling nuclear power plant is set to feature six Hualong One reactors once completed. Units 1 and 2 entered construction in 2019 and 2020 respectively and are scheduled for 2025. The Jinqimen nuclear power plant, which will be operated by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), is also expected to feature six Hualong One reactors. Unit 1 is scheduled for operations by end-2028.

At the end of 2022, China’s nuclear capacity reached 55.5 GW and its nuclear power generation reached 418 TWh. China targets 200 GW of nuclear capacity by 2035. The country currently has over 31 GW of nuclear capacity under construction and 176 GW under development.
