The Chinese province of Shanxi, the country’s major coal-producing region, plans to raise its annual coal output by 107 Mt in 2022, reaching 1.3 Gt, in order to guarantee energy supply. The province is also seeking to increase coal production by a further 50 Mt in 2023, bringing its total annual production to 1.35 Gt.
In 2021, China production of coal increases steadily, reaching approximatively 4 Gt in 2021 (+5% compared to 2020, +20% compared to 2010). China’s total consumption of coal reached 4.1 Gt in 2021 (+5% compared to 2020, +22% compared to 2010).
China is still very reliant on coal, as it accounted in 2021 for 52% of China's installed capacity with 1,224 GW and 63% of its power generation with 5,412 TWh. China pledged to stop building new coal-fired power projects abroad and to reach 80% of non-fossil fuels in its energy mix by 2060.
