Zhenhua Oil, an affiliate of Chinese defence contractor Norinco, plans to increase output from the East Baghdad oil field in Nahrawan and Suwayrah regions (Iraq) to over 80,000 bbl/d, and dry gas to 50 mcm/d, supplying power plants and the Dora refinery. The oil field, which is estimated to hold nearly 8 Gbl, currently produces 30,000 bbl/d, with a peak production goal of 40,000 bbl/d. Iraq produced 4,160 kb/d of crude oil and NGL in 2021 (-1% compared to 2020).
In March 2023, the Iraqi state-owned Thi-Qar Oil Company (TOC) gave approval to Lukoil (Russia) and Inpex, a Japanese oil and gas company, for the Eridu oil field development plan. The 250,000 bbl/d project, which has estimated oil reserves of 12.9 Gbl, is located in Block 10, an area of 5,800 km2 in the southern part of Iraq, 120 km west of the town of Basra and 150 km from the West Qurna-2 field.
