The Chinese National Energy Administration has released its 15th Five-Year Plan for Renewable Energy Development (2026-2030), setting a target of 3.5 TW of installed renewable power capacity and around 6,000 TWh/year of renewable electricity generation by 2030 (Chinese government press release, 23/07/2026).
Under the plan, China aims to increase renewable energy consumption to 1.8 billion tonnes of coal equivalent (about 1,260 Mtoe) by 2030. Combined capacity of wind and solar is expected to exceed 2.8 TW, generating more than 4,000 TWh/year. The country also plans to add more than 300 GW of reliable peak-shaving capacity from renewable sources and launch around 100 GW of new offshore wind projects during the 2026-2030 period.
The roadmap includes targets of 410 GW of marine energy, 160 GW of pumped-storage hydropower, 15 GW of solar thermal capacity and 0.4 GW of marine energy by 2030. Authorities also expect renewable energy use outside the power sector to increase by 150 Mtoe, representing a 2.5-fold rise compared with 2025.
According to the plan, renewable energy is expected to account for nearly half of China's electricity generation by 2030, while non-fossil sources should represent around half of the country's power mix.
