The Chinese National Energy Administration (NEA) has unveiled its 2025 energy work guidelines, in which China plans to add over 200 GW of renewable energy capacity during the course of 2025, with a total power generation estimated to reach 10,600 TWh.
According to NEA, these additions would bring the total installed capacity in China to over 3,600 GW by the end of 2025, including around 1,610 GW of renewable capacity. Non-fossil energy sources are expected to account for around 20% of the total energy consumption in 2025
In 2024, China already installed record capacity for solar and wind, with renewable capacity additions accounting for 86% of the newly installed capacity. According to NEA preliminary estimates, solar capacity surged by a record 45.2% (+277 GW) to reach 887 GW, while wind power capacity increased by 18% (+80 GW) to reach nearly 521 GW. Hydropower capacity rose by 3.2% to nearly 436 GW, while nuclear capacity increased by 6.9% to nearly 61 GW. In 2024, power generation increased by 4.6% in 2024, reaching 9,418 TWh, with a rise in thermal generation (+1.5%), hydropower (+11%), wind (+11%) and solar (+28%).
