China's Gezhouba Group stops building a 130 MW hydro project in Niger

The Chinese group Gezhouba has suspended the 130 MW Kandadji hydroelectric project in the Tillabery region of Niger, following  sanctions imposed by ECOWAS, the European Union and the World Bank in response to the military takeover on 26 July 2023. With a total estimated cost of around XOF 700bn (US$1.3bn), the project was financed by the African Development Bank, the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank and the French Development Agency.

The dam project is led by the High Commission for the Development of the Niger Valley. It has been planned for more than 50 years but was delayed due to financing problems and by the cancellation in 2013 of the construction contract awarded to Zarubezhvodstroy, due to significant delays in construction. A new contract was awarded in August 2018 to China Gezhouba and construction restarted in April 2019. Commissioning has been delayed from 2025 to 2026 and the project is expected to generate on average 639 GWh/year. The reservoir will also increase access to water for agriculture.
