China’s electricity consumption increased by 5% in 2025 to 10,400 TWh, according to the country’s National Bureau of Statistics (Xinhua, 17/01/2025). The country’s power demand was mainly driven up by positive macroeconomic fundamentals, warmer weather, and increased household electrification. In addition, electric vehicles and wind power manufacturing contributed to electricity consumption’s growth, with +20% and +30%, respectively. Power use in the digital economy and new technologies and electricity consumption in the battery charging and swapping sector also soared significantly, by respectively +30% and +50%, amid a rapid rollout of charging points (+52% to over 19 million). In parallel, power generation by main activity producers (i.e., excluding auto-production) rose by 2% in 2025 to 9,716 TWh.
The country also produced 4.83 Gt of coal in 2025 (+1.2%), while coal imports declined by 9.6% to 490 Mt, according to the National Bureau of Statistics and China Customs. Similarly, China’s crude oil production rose by 1.5% to 216 Mt and imports by 4.4% to 578 Mt; the crude oil refining volume increased by 4.1% to 738 Mt, reducing oil product imports by 12%. Finally, gas production increased by 6.2% to 262 bcm and imports fell by 3%.
