China's electricity consumption rose by 3.8% in 2014

According to the National Energy Administration of China, electricity consumption in China rose by 3.8% in 2014, a sharp slowdown from the previous 7.5% in 2013. The main consumer was the industrial sector (nearly 74% of total electricity consumption) and industrial electricity consumption increased by 3.7% in 2014. Power demand from the agriculture sector remained stable (-0.2% at 99.4 TWh), while that from the service sector rose by 6.4% to more than 660 TWh and that from households increased by 2.2% to 693 TWh.

Installed public capacity increased by 8.7% from 1,250 GW to 1,360 GW, including 916 GW of public thermal capacity (+5.9%, from 866 GW in 2013) and 302 GW of hydropower capacity (+7.8% from 280 GW in 2013). Nuclear power capacity rose by more than 30%, from 15 GW to nearly 20 GW, while renewable power capacities soared: +26% for wind power (from 75 GW in 2013 to 96 GW in 2014) and + 67% for grid-connected solar power (from 15 GW in 2013 to 26 GW in 2014).
