China’s coal, oil, gas and electricity production increased in 2022

According to preliminary data from China’s National Bureau of Statistics, China produced 4.5 Gt of coal in 2022, a 9% increase compared to the production in 2021. Meanwhile, coal imports declined by 9.2% to reach 290 Mt in 2022.

Chinese crude oil production increased by 2.9% in 2022, reaching 204.7 Mt. Crude oil imports declined slightly by 0.9%, standing at 508.3 Mt in 2022. China’s oil refinery throughput fell by 3.4% in 2022, reaching 675.9 Mt. 

China's natural gas production increased by 6.4% to 217.8 bcm. However, natural gas imports stood at 109.25 Mt (150.7 bcm) in 2022, a year-on-year decrease of 9.9%.

Electricity generation also increased in 2022, reaching 8,400 TWh (+2.2% compared to 2021). According to preliminary data from the Chinese Electricity Council, power consumption also increased in 2022, reaching 8,637 TWh (+3.6% compared to 2021). From January to December 2022, 114.6 TWh (+10.4%) were consumed by the primary sector (agriculture), 5,700 TWh (+1.2%) was used by industry, and 1,486 TWh (+4.4%) was consumed by the tertiary sector (services). Urban and rural residents' domestic electricity consumption increased by 13.8% to 1,337 TWh in 2022.
