Nucleoeléctrica Argentina, the state-owned company in charge of nuclear power in Argentina, has awarded a contract to China National Nuclear Corp. (CNNC) for the construction of the fourth Argentine nuclear power plant, Atucha III, a 1,200 MW reactor to be installed at the Atucha nuclear power plant in the town of Lima, in the province of Buenos Aires. The project will use China's Hualong One technology, a third-generation pressurised water reactor (PWR), and will require an investment of more than US$8bn.
Argentina has 3 nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 1 755 MW: Atucha I (362 MW), Embalse (648 MW), and Atucha II (745 MW). The US$2.4bn Atucha II plant (renamed Nestor Kirchner) started commercial operations in 2014. In 2016, Argentina had signed an agreement with CNNC to develop two nuclear reactors, Atucha III (740 MW PHWR) and Atucha IV (1150 MW), but the financing agreement was scrapped to avoid a US$12bn debt and the projects remained frozen.
