China's CGN and SAM will build an 800 MW solar park in Minas Gerais (Brazil)

The government of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais has authorised an agreement between CGN Brasil Energia e Participacoes, a subsidiary of the Chinese state-owned energy group CGN (China General Nuclear), and the Brazilian mining company Sul Americana de Metais (SAM) for the construction of an 800 MW solar park in the north of the Minais Gerais region (eastern Brazil).

Under the agreement, CGN Energia and SAM will create a joint venture to develop the solar project, which will require an investment of BRL3bn (US$554m). Construction is expected to begin in 2024. The energy generated from the solar project, which is expected to reach 1.5 TWh/year, will be used to supply power to CGN Energia’s Block 8 project, which consists in the development of an iron mining complex and a water dam, with a total planned investment of US$2.1bn.

At end-2021, solar accounted for 7% of Brazil’s installed capacity with 13 GW, behind wind (11%, 21 GW) and hydropower (57%, 109 GW).
