The China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to develop a 2 GW solar project in Saudi Arabia. The US$972m Haden solar project, will be built in western Saudi Arabia, 93 km northeast of Taif, Makkah province.
CEEC signed the EPC contract through a consortium of three subsidiaries: China Energy International Group, China Energy Engineering Group Guangdong Thermal Power Engineering, and China Electric Power Engineering Consulting Group Northwest Electric Power Design Institute. The project will be developed in collaboration with Buraiq Renewable Energy, a subsidiary of the Saudi company ACWA Power. Construction of the project is expected to take 31 months.
In July 2024, the Chinese company JinkoSolar had signed an agreement to invest in a US$985m, 10 GW solar cell and module manufacturing plant in the country.
Saudi Arabia plans to reach 50% renewable energy in the production capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2060.
