China Yangtze Power will build a 1.4 GW pumped storage project in Gansu (China)

The China Yangtze Power Company has approved a proposal on investment and construction of the 1.4 GW Zhangye pumped-storage hydropower plant, located in the Ganzhou and Sunan Counties of the Gansu Province (western China). The company plans to install four 350 MW single-stage reversible mixed-flow pump-turbine units for the project, which is expected to produce over 1.6 TWh/year of electricity. Total investment for the project is estimated at nearly CNY9.6bn (US$1.3bn). The power generated will be transmitted through two sets of 330 kV lines, connected to the 330 kV Ganzhou substation. Construction of the project is expected to begin in December 2023, while first power generation is expected for April 2028.

China aims to build more than 200 pumped storage plants with a combined capacity of 270 GW by 2025. At the end of 2022, China’s pumped storage capacity reached 45.8 GW, a 26% increase compared to 2021 and a more than twofold increase compared to ten years earlier (20.3 GW in 2012).
