China will resume approval for coastal nuclear projects

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China plans to resume the approval process for nuclear power plants proposed along the eastern coast of China. The construction of new coastal plants will be carried out under strict safety protocols.

The authorisation process had been suspended in March 2011 after the Fukushima accident in Japan, when China decided to freeze approvals for inland nuclear projects. Only coastal sites would be approved in the 12th plan period (2011-2015), depending on satisfactory safety measures (assurance that existing plants were adequately designed, sited, protected and managed). This decision meant significant rescheduling for inland projects at Taohuajiang, Xianning and Pengze, which had previously been expected to start construction before 2015.

China has 23 operational reactors, with a combined capacity of 19 GW, and 27 new reactors under construction with a combined capacity of 27 GW.
