China will implement stricter fuel standards against diesel trucks

The Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment will take action against highly-polluting diesel trucks by imposing tougher fuel and engine standards, and by raising domestic rail freight volumes. Besides, the quality of diesel itself will be improved by reducing overall nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter emissions from fuel combustion. The number of diesel trucks able to meet national emissions standards is expected to significantly increase by 2020 and the government targets a compliance rate of at least 90% by then.

New trucks entering the market that fail to comply with the new regulation will not be authorised, while several regions will implement the so-called "China VI" advanced fuel standards starting from July 2019. In addition, more than 1 million outdated diesel-fueled trucks will be taken out of the market by the end of 2020.

Curbing truck-based emissions has become a significant part of the country's efforts to curb pollution. Even though they accounted for 7.8% of the Chinese vehicle park, they contributed to as much as 57% of the total domestic NOx emissions and around 75% of particulate matters.
