China Western Power signs deal to build a 1.8 GW coal-fired power plant in Laos

Laos has signed US$1.7bn worth of energy deals with a Chinese power plant equipment manufacturer, as well as with a Singapore-based construction company, for the construction of a 1.8 GW supercritical coal-fired power plant and a power transmission project in southern Laos.

The Sichuan-based group China Western Power Industrial signed a US$1.45bn agreement with the Sekong Thermal Power Plant for the development of the power plant. China Western Power will be responsible for the design, procurement, and supply of equipment and raw materials for the power plant, while its partner, Singapore-based Embark Aspiration, will handle construction, which is expected to be completed by 2030.

In addition, China Western Power also signed a US$229m deal with Sekong Thermal Power Plant for the establishment of a 500 kV power transmission line, whose construction is scheduled for completion by 2027.
