China Three Gorges plans a 16 GW multi-energy project in Inner Mongolia (China)

China’s Three Gorges Renewables Group has announced that its onshore subsidiary Inner Mongolia Three Gorges Mengneng Energy will invest CNY79.8bn (US$11bn) in a 16 GW integrated energy project to be located in Ordos city, in north China's Inner Mongolia region. The project will include 8 GW of solar PV power installations, 4 GW of wind power, 4 GW of coal-fired power, 200 MW of solar thermal, as well as 5 GWh of energy storage capacity.

Construction of the project is set to begin in September 2024, and the project is scheduled for completion by June 2027. It will notably dispatch electricity to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei cluster in northern China via an 800 kV ultra-high voltage power transmission line. China Three Gorges Renewables' onshore unit holds 56% of the project, while the Inner Mongolia Energy Group holds the remaining 44%.

Solar power capacity in China soared by 55% in 2023 to surpass 609 GW, while wind power installed capacity rose by nearly 21%, surpassing 441 GW. The Chinese Government has committed to build 1,200 GW of renewables capacity by 2030. The country plans to achieve peak emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
