China targets 50% of non-fossil energy sources in power mix by 2030

The Chinese National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration have jointly released the 15th Five-Year Plan for New Power System Construction, targeting 50% of non-fossil energy sources in China’s power mix by 2030 (41% in 2025), according to China Daily (03/08/2025). The blueprint outlines a roadmap for building a green, low-carbon and resilient power system. By 2030, electricity is projected to represent 35% of China's final energy consumption (29% in 2025), supporting the country's decarbonisation goals.

By 2030, conventional hydropower capacity is forecast to reach 410 GW and nuclear 110 GW, while other renewable sources such as biomass, solar thermal, geothermal, and ocean energy together will account for around 65 GW

As the power system decarbonises, non-fossil sources are expected to account for 40% of the country's firm generation capacity by 2030. At the same time, the share of clean, high-efficiency coal-fired units larger than 600 MW will rise by over 10 percentage points to strengthen system reliability.

The plan aims to strengthen grid flexibility by unlocking 50 GW of flexible capacity from EVs through smart charging and vehicle-to-grid technologies by 2030. In addition, pumped-storage hydropower capacity is planned to increase to 160 GW by 2030, alongside 300 GW of new energy storage capacity.
