The Chinese government has announced the start of construction works at the Xizang (Tibet) section of its Xizang-Guangdong ultra-high-voltage (UHV) power transmission line (Chinese government press release, 29/04/2026). The Xizang section consists of two ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission lines totalling 302 km and two converter stations with capacities of 8 GW and 5 GW, respectively. The section is scheduled to start power transmission by 2028, and to become fully operational in 2029.
The overall project represents an investment of CNY53.2bn (USD7.8bn) and it is expected to have a transmission capacity of 10 GW to distribute clean electricity produced in China's Xizang Autonomous Region across a 2,681-km long line to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Construction of the Guangdong section of the project started in September 2025. Once completed, the project should be able to supply 43 TWh/year and avoid the emission of 33 MtCO2/year, according to China’s State Grid Xizang Electric Power Co., Ltd.
