China starts building an 875 km, 750 kV transmission project in Xinjiang

The Xinjiang branch of the State Grid Corporation of China (State Grid) has started the construction of a 750 kV ultra-high voltage (UHV) power transmission and electrical substation project in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region (Northwest China). The CNY4.6bn (US$662m) transmission project will be built in the Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture and span 875 km, linking the towns of Korla and Tieganlik. In addition, a 750 kV substation will be built in Ruoqiang County and the 750 kV Bazhou substation will be expanded. The project is expected to be completed and put into operation in December 2024. The project is expected to promote the interconnection of power grids between Xinjiang and the neighbouring Qinghai province, supply power for a railroad connecting the two regions and boost energy storage.

In its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), China pledged that over CNY110bn (US$15.8bn) would be invested in Xinjiang's power grid, up 55% from the 13th Five-Year Plan.
