China starts building an 800 kV, 8 GW Gansu-Shandong transmission line

State Grid Corporation of China has started the construction of an 800 kV ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmissions line, which will span 926 km and will link Longdong in the western Chinese province of Gansu to the Shandong province in eastern China. The transmission project will be able to send 8 GW of wind, solar PV and thermal power to Shandong.

The project, which requires an investment of CNY20.2bn (US$2.9bn), is expected to be commissioned in 2025. Once completed, it is expected to send more than 36 TWh/year of electricity to the Shandong Province. The line will also run through the provinces of Shaanxi, Shanxi and Hebei.

Earlier in March 2023, the Xinjiang branch of State Grid Corporation of China also started the construction of a 750 kV ultra-high voltage (UHV) power transmission and electrical substation project in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region in Northwest China.
