China starts building an 8 GW transmission line and a 1.4 GW hydro plant

The State Grid Corporation of China (State Grid) has started the construction of the Jinshang-Hubei 800-kV ultra-high voltage (UHV) power transmission line, with a capacity of 8 GW, that will span 1,900 km between the Tibet Autonomous region and the Chinese province of Hubei, passing through Sichuan and Chongqing. Currently, the line is the world’s highest-altitude UHV direct current power transmission project.

In addition, State Grid began the construction of a 1.4 GW pumped-storage hydropower plant in the Hubei Province. The Tongshan pumped-storage hydropower plant will be equipped with four power units, each with a capacity of 350 MW. State Grid estimates that the total required investment for the two projects will reach CNY42.7bn (US$6.2bn).

State Grid has completed the construction of 33 UHV projects in China and plans to construct 27 GW of pumped-storage hydropower during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25).
