China plans to cut CO2 emissions from coal-fired plants by 20% by 2020

The Chinese cabinet has announced that China would reduce the emissions of major pollutants in the power sector by 60% by 2020 and CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants by 180 Mt per year by 2020 (without mentioning comparison figures or measures to reach the result).

Air pollution in Beijing and in large cities has already incited China to pledge to cap its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by around 2030.

If we take 2015 as the baseline the reduction of CO2 emissions is ambitious as it corresponds to a decrease by 20% of CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants between 2015 and 2020 but realistic as it is in line with the average 2014 trends and 2015 trends of the first 10 months.
