China plans to build up to 30 nuclear reactors under its Belt and Road initiative

China is considering building up to 30 nuclear reactors worldwide over the next decade, as part of its Belt and Road initiative. So far, 41 Belt and Road countries already have nuclear power programmes or are considering developing them: Belt and Road nuclear projects could bring Chinese companies up to CNY 1,000bn (over US$145.5bn) by 2030. China aims to promote its local designs and technologies overseas and to export its own third-generation reactor model, the Hualong One. Exporting nuclear equipment could help Chinese nuclear manufacturers, which are facing overcapacities as their domestic market is slowing down (over 3 years of suspension for new projects approvals, and technical problems and delays at some key nuclear power projects).

Launched in 2013, the Belt and Road Initiative aims at developing new infrastructure and investments, while improving connectivity between China and more than 70 "corridor countries" worldwide.
