China has approved four new nuclear power projects comprising eight generating units, with total investment estimated at more than CNY 170 bn (USD 25 bn), according to the Global Times (31/07/2026). The projects include Phase II of the Jinqimen Nuclear Power Plant in Zhejiang Province, eastern China; Phase III of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant in Guangdong Province, southern China; the Zhuanghe Nuclear Power Plant in Liaoning Province, northeastern China; and the Laiyang Nuclear Power Plant in Shandong Province, eastern China. Zhuanghe and Laiyang are greenfield nuclear power plant sites.
Phase II of the Jinqimen Nuclear Power Plant and Phase III of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant will consist of Hualong One Version 2.0 reactors (1,217 MW each), the latest evolution of China's domestically developed nuclear reactor technology. In addition, the Laiyang project will comprise two Guohe One reactors, each with a capacity of 1,543 MW.
China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) has fully commissioned Phase I of the Taipingling Nuclear Power Plant following the start-up of Unit 2 in Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, southern China (China Daily, 03/08/2026). Unit 2 consists of a Hualong One reactor with a capacity of 1.2 GW and entered construction in October 2020. Unit 1 entered commercial operations in April 2026.
