China grants approval to major hydropower projects

China's National Development and Reform Commission approved the construction of three hydropower projects in the Sichuan province. The 2.6 GW Changheba power plant will be operational by late 2016 (full operation by 2018). Sichuan Datang International Ganzi Hydropower Development Company will invest about $3.48bn in this project. The Ertan Group received approval for two hydropower projects and started the construction of a 2.4 GW power plant at Guan'di (operational by July 2013) and of a 600 MW power plant at Tongzilin (operational by June 2016).

In late October 2010, the NDRC agreed for China Three Gorges Power Corp (CTGPC) to proceed with early-stage studies for the 8.7 GW Wudongde and 14 GW Baihetan hydropower projects, which will enhance the existing capacity of the Three Gorges dam. Two additional dams, Xiangjiaba (6 GW) and Xiluodu (12.6 GW), are already under construction and should be operational by 2012 and 2013.
