China completes 8 GW Baihetan-Jiangsu UHVDC power transmission line

China’s power transmission system operator (TSO) State Grid has completed the construction of the Baihetan-Jiangsu 800 kV ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) power transmission project. The 2,080 km transmission line project, whose construction started in late 2020, will transmit hydropower from the 16 GW Baihetan power plant in the Sichuan province to the Jiangsu province, starting end of June 2022. The project will come into full operation by the end of 2022 and will reach an 8 GW power transmission capacity, as well as deliver over 31 TWh/year of electricity.

China is planning to build several other UHV power line projects from western China to the more populous eastern part of the country. These projects are expected to reach a total of 56 GW power transmission capacity by 2025.
