China begins construction of two 1 GW USC coal-fired power units in Guangdong

China’s Guangdong Electric Power Development Company has announced the start of construction of Units 5 and 6 at its Shanwei Honghaiwan coal-fired power plant, located in southern China’s Guangdong province. The ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired units have a capacity of 1 GW each, and commissioning is scheduled for 2025. Once completed the project is expected to generate over 9 TWh/year of electricity.

The Shanwei power plant already has four operational units totalling 2,520 MW. Units 1 and 2 (600 MW each) were commissioned in 2008, while Units 3 and 4 (660 MW each, also deemed ultra-supercritical), were commissioned in 2010 and 2011.

As of end-2023, coal-fired capacity still represented 43% of China’s installed capacity and 62% of its power generation, although these shares have been decreasing in recent years with the development of renewables and nuclear energy in the country.
