The Development and Reform Commission of the Chinese province of Hainan has approved the development of two offshore wind projects totalling 2.4 GW, which will be located off the city of Danzhou, Hainan province (southern China).
The first 1.2 GW project, called the Hainan CZ2 Offshore Wind Power Demonstration Project, will be built the Chinese energy company Shenergy, via its subsidiary Hainan Shenergy New Energy, for a total investment of about CNY15bn (€2.2bn). The second 1.2 GW offshore wind project that was approved will be developed by the company China Datang via its subsidiary Datang Hainan Energy Development Company.
China’s offshore wind capacity stood at 19.7 GW by end-2021. Around 17 GW of offshore wind projects were commissioned in 2021. The country’s overall wind capacity reached 328 GW by end-2021.
