China approves four new nuclear reactors (4.2 GW)

The State Council of China has approved the construction of four new nuclear reactors, with a combined capacity of 4,160 MW.

Two 1,080 MW ACPR1000 reactors will be built at the Tianwan nuclear power plant in Jiangsu province; the units 5 and 6 of the Tianwan plant will be 50% owned by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), 30% by China Power Investment and 20% by Jiangsu Guoxin Asset Management Group. Construction has already started but was suspended after the Fukushima accident in March 2011. The Tianwan plant already has two 990 MW reactors commissioned in 2006 and 2007 and two 990 MW units currently under construction.

Moreover, the State Council has approved the construction of two Hualong One reactors of 1,000 MW each as units 3 and 4 of the Fangchenggang plant in Guangxi province. These units are owned 61% by China General Nuclear (CGN) and 39% by Guangxi Investment Group. Two CPR-1000 units (1,000 MW each) are under construction on the Fangchenggang site; with unit 1 connected to the grid in late October 2015. Up to six units are planned. Units 3 and 4 will be based on Hualong One reactors, and units 5 and 6 will to be AP1000s (1,100 MW each).
