Chile’s SEA grants approval for a 794 MW onshore wind project in Antofagasta

The Chilean environmental assessment agency SEA has granted an environmental approval for the construction of a nearly 794 MW onshore wind project located in the Taltal district, Antofagasta region (northern Chile). The Antofagasta Wind project, which will require an estimated investment of US$684m, will be developed by the Spanish developer Ibereólica and will comprise 128 turbines rated 6.2 MW each. In addition, the construction of a 13 km high voltage transmission line and of a 33/500 kV transformer substation is also planned to connect the wind park to the Parinas substation.

Another large-scale wind park, the 812 MW Horizon wind project, developed by the Chilean power group Colbún, is also currently being developed in the Taltal district of Chile.

At the end of 2021, wind represented about 10% of the country’s installed capacity with 3.1 GW and 8% of its power generation with 7.3 TWh. Chile currently has more than 3 GW of wind projects under construction and nearly 20 GW under development.
